About Me
My name is Simon SIlva and I am a photographer born and raised in Houston, Texas. Being raised in the southwest side of Houston I was shown a diverse set of cultures all within one location; Diasporas from around the world fostering a community of its own. This is shown in many of the photos I take. A majority of my subjects are black and brown people whom I want to show a positive representation of. I believe that is why I am drawn to photography; I want to represent those who are often seen in a negative light. .
I primarily shoot digital as I prefer the immediacy that it provides especially when compared to film. Another reason I prefer to shoot digital is because I feel like my options and techniques have no limits, specifically when it comes to using technology such as photoshop. I often shoot at a wide angle because I always want to emphasize the context around the subject, not just the subject themselves. Others often say many of my works invoke a cinematic feeling. This is true in the sense that I treat my photoshoots like movie sets. Everything is intentional and I am a control freak. Lighting and props are especially important as they emphasize the context I was talking about earlier. Most of my editorial work is conceptual at heart.
